We’re all financial planners. Everybody makes money decisions at some level: saving for retirement, buying a house, paying for college, keeping a family budget. So – how are you doing?
In 2006, after over 25 years of owning a CPA firm, I became a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™. So why did I add some new initials to my name as I was about to turn 50? Because as I looked for someone who could give my clients the respect, dedication, and attention they deserved, I realized they needed me. Being a CFP was just the first step - I believed my clients deserved more! So in 2007 - 2009 I went through the process of becoming a Registered Life Planner.

As I'm sure you're aware, no matter where you turn, there is a lot of competition for your business. You will read a lot of hype and everyone has a sure-fire "tip"...or a "green line" to follow...or the offer of "great research". However, I've done this for years in one capacity or another and I still can say that the only thing that is sure in the investment world is that NOTHING is for sure.
ATTENTION: Some advisors are available...as long as you call them. Some are available...if you can find them. And then there are those of us who don't wait for you to call. We are in this business because we sincerely care about you and what is going on in your life. You know, unless I really understand what you need from me and why you are here, you won't have a satisfying experience - and it takes more than the answers you fill out on a questionnaire. It takes time, attention, and interest in you.
CREATIVITY: No, I don't mean playing fast and loose with your numbers and daring Uncle Sam to push back. I'm talking about a person who will take the time to ask "What if?" and "Is there a better way?" Why is it so hard to find someone who is willing to color outside the lines? Because the time it takes can cut into profit margins. The truly connected advisor, however, knows that it will pay off with satisfied, successful, loyal clients in the long run...AND that these satisfied clients will refer other clients who are looking for a "better way". I sum it up when I tell my clients: "Your MONEY is not my client - YOU are."
FEES: Financial advisors have three basic fee structures:
1) Fee only
2) Commission only
3) Fee plus commission
The top of our sites's homepage proudly proclaims that we are a Fee-Only firm for a reason: I am a member of NAPFA, which allows only members who are truly "Fee-Only" and who have demonstrated skills as financial planners. Learn more about what it means for you to use a Fee-Only Planner on NAPFA's Consumer Services FAQ page.
ETHICS: This should be a given in our industry - unfortunately, it is not. As a CPA for 30 years, the way I explain it to clients is this: "If there is a grey area, we'll explore it, we'll even take pains to find out about it and discuss it with you. We will walk the line for you to make sure your best interests are served, but we WILL NEVER cross the line." In the financial services industry, where advisors have so much control over your finances, it is imperative to work with an ethical advisor.
UP-TO-DATE: We put a lot of time into continuing education - much more than the 30 annual hours required by the CFP(R) Board. How does this help you? By working with a planner who knows what is going on currently not just in the financial markets, but also in a wide range of areas that will affect you, from taxes to estates planning to retirement planning to health insurance. We also stay up-to-date on technology, which can save you both time and money. Not only is your information more secure, but you will have access to the best advice and service no matter where you are. Of course, you always have the option to meet face-to-face, but for some, that is not possible or convenient. You don't have to worry - we have the resources to help you whether you're next door or in the next state.
