Suggested Reading & Websites

Because nobody has time to read just anything, this page is more than just a clever website placeholder. Our titles encompass a broad selection - from quick reads (newsletters and blogs) to books (financial and beyond) that will broaden your horizons. Most important, this is stuff we read, and we update this page often. Enjoy!

Books we recommend:

  • Too Good to be True: The Rise and Fall of Bernie Madoff by Erin Arvedlund - This story of how Bernie Madoff was able to pull off the biggest pyramid hoax ever reads like a true-crime thriller. The takeaway: how he did it and what you should beware of if you use a financial advisor. Read by: Johanna

  • Fool's Gold by Gillian Tett - If you'd like to understand derivatives, and how they figured in the financial collapse in 2008, this book explains a complicated subject. Most interesting are the personal stories of the bright young bunch of J P Morgan bankers who came up with the idea with the best of intentions and how it got out of hand. Read by: Johanna

  • I Don't Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist by Norman Geisler and Frank Turek with introduction by David Limbaugh - David Limbaugh's introduction convinced me to read this book. If you've ever struggled with what to say when a non-believer pelts you with the standard litany of questions, I highly recommend this well-written book. Read by: Johanna
  • Freedom from Fear by David Kennedy - Want to know why they call it the "Great" Depression? Did you know that the Wall Street crash didn't cause it? "You Were There" in America through the depression and World War II. Read by: Johanna

  • Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity by David Allen - This book came highly recommended at the November 2011 NAPFA Practice Management and Investments conference and I purchased it immediately. The simple ideas in GTD are helping me to finally get organized and get things done, not just at work, but in life. GTD is going to be a must-read for our whole office. Read by: Johanna
